BEFORE THE FIRST CHAPTER

A word from Wylie

Preface

This memoir is not a story of perfection, nor is it an attempt to paint life in brighter colors than it deserves. It is a record — plain, chronological, and honest — of the path I walked from a drought‑stricken farm in Lohn, Texas, to the final years I shared with the woman God placed in my life at the right time. I have written these chapters the same way I lived them: without embellishment, without excuses, and without leaving out the parts that were difficult to face.

My life has been shaped by hardship, by choices made in fear and in hope, by the responsibilities of fatherhood, and by the consequences of decisions that could not be undone. It has also been shaped by the unmistakable interventions of God — when survival, direction, protection, and even the ending of my first two marriages came in ways I could not explain at the time. Only later did I understand that those moments and events were not accidents.

I have lived through three marriages, each different in its own way. I have known the weight of losing children to distance and courts, and the joy of seeing them grow into men, two of them with families of their own. I have known the pain of divorce, the strain of conflict, and the quiet resolve required to keep moving forward when the road narrowed. And I have known the blessing of a marriage built on harmony, faith, and shared purpose — a marriage that lasted until the very minute God chose to end it.

This memoir is written for my sons, for my granddaughters and grandson, for the family who may one day want to understand where they came from, and for anyone who finds value in a life told plainly. It is also written as a record of God’s hand in my life — not in grand gestures, but in steady, unmistakable moments of protection and guidance.

I have tried to tell the truth as I lived it. The events are presented as they happened, without dramatization. The emotions are real, but they are not exaggerated. The lessons are not forced; they simply appear where life reveals them.

If this book has a purpose, it is to leave behind a clear account — a legacy of facts, choices, faith, and endurance — so that those who come after me will know the path that led to them.

Author’s Note

This memoir was written with one purpose: to leave an accurate record of the life I lived, the choices I made, the people I loved, and the faith that carried me through every season. I did not write it to settle scores, to justify decisions, or to reshape the past into something more comfortable. I wrote it so that my sons, my son’s family, my granddaughters, McKenna, and anyone who comes after me will know the truth as I experienced it.

The events in these pages are presented as they happened to the best of my memory. Some moments were painful, some were unexpected, and some were blessings I did not deserve. I have tried to tell each one plainly, without exaggeration or embellishment. Life provides enough weight on its own; it does not need to be dramatized.

I have lived through hardship, loss, and conflict, but I have also lived through protection, guidance, and love. I have seen God intervene in ways I did not understand at the time. I have seen relationships break and others be restored. I have seen the consequences of decisions made in youth and the quiet rewards of perseverance later in life.

Most of all, I have seen the value of truth — not the polished kind, but the kind that stands on its own, even when it is difficult. That is the truth I have tried to preserve here.

If this book serves any purpose beyond my own record, I hope it shows that a life does not have to be perfect to be meaningful. It only must be lived honestly, with faith, and with the determination to keep moving forward when the road is steep.

This is my account. These are my years. And this is the legacy I leave behind.
